Blimey. An angle grinder seems a bit extreme. I used a wire brush attachment for a power drill on my Brodie helmet - it takes off rust and flakey paint in about a second, longer for sound paint and leaves the metal pretty much undamaged.

+1 for use of a wire brush attachment. Have found they're the best for more restorative work.

I have one of the said wire brush drill attachments - did very little for my FJ Helmet, so I got some sanding discs and let rip

If I were you I would use Nitromorse paint stripper to clean the helmet, it will avoid potentially dangerous leaded paint dust.

I'll do that..Seems the safer option..well I cant see nitromorse being any less toxic, but atleast its controllable.

I'll get some pics during and some of the stripped artical..I'll start a thread in the general discussions area.

4 people in my department are leaving next Friday - their jobs are going to Bangalore. There is the likelihood of more next year. I'm afraid that is what business is like, especially in my field.

...learned that you can stretch a pegasus airborne helmet liner up one size. (it says it's my size, but it was too small!)

how?

I need to stretch mine up a bit... :)

A little bit of steam and a hat jack:

http://www.simplyoz.com/products/hats/a ... _stretcher

If you can wait until Dec 14th you can borrow mine, it's a medium I think, I bought it to stretch an RAF officer's service dress cap.

There wasn't much space in the shell while stretching so I took the liner out to stretch it. (I think my head is "long oval" :( ) but once the strap was back in it tightened up a bit again so I needed to stretch it more. The aluminium band does distort during shtretching but is seemed to pop back in to shape okay. If you stretch with the liner in the helmet the whole shell distorts, but again it goes back to shape afterwards.

Watch out for the white felt behind the soft leather lining - it can shrink (go narrow) where it's not held in place by the jack - pull it back to shape while still warm & damp. It's the stiff leather band your trying to stretch so watch for the glue holding the sorbo on, just make sure you press it back in to place. After I used a leather restorer cream in case the band dries out a bit from steaming.

There is info on hat stretching all over the web, but most of it is about Fedoras and the like, not about helmets.
